First Half of 2012 Shows Steady Growth but Falls below Recent Years
WHITE PLAINS, NY: “The number of deeds recorded during the first half of 2012 shows a slow but steady increase in Westchester property transfers so far this year,” reported Westchester County Clerk Timothy C. Idoni whose office records land records such as deeds transferring Westchester properties. “However, we still have a way to go before our housing market recovers,” continued Idoni who noted that the 5,389 deeds recorded in the first half of 2012 falls below the numbers recorded in the first half of 2011 (5,956 deeds) and the first half of 2010 (5,751 deeds). In addition, the first half total for 2012 falls forty three percent (43%) below the first half total of five years ago.

“With local brokers reporting increased activity and interest rates at record lows, there is reason to be hopeful that property transfers will continue to climb in the coming quarter,” concluded Idoni. Property transfers generate revenue for the county in the form of recording fees and for New York State in the form of recording fees as well as applicable transfer and income taxes. If transfers are supported by a mortgage, additional state and county revenue is generated.
